IN CASE OF POLIO With polio on the increase in 38 of the 48 states, the Spartan burg County Chapter of the Na tional Foundation for Infantile Paralysis has announced procedure to be followed when a case of polio appears in the county. The attending physician or the family should notify Lore S. Brown in Spartanburg, who is chairman of the county chapter. The chair man will see that some represen tative of the chapter calls upon the family to offer sympathy, ad vice and assistance. Usually the physician arranges for admission of the patient to one of the hospitals which has been designated as a polio treat ment center. Only hospitals ac cepted by the Joint Commission, on Accreditation of Hospitals are used. In some lighter cases of polio, treatment may be given in the home, the medical service division of the National Founda tion advises. Financial aid is given by NFIP chapters whenever families cannot bear the full cost, the local chap ter announced. Aid is given from March of Dimes funds raise^in this county each January, wfl^ut regard to race, creed or color. The National Foundation states: “Families that can pay all or part of the cost , of care, or that have polio insurance or hospital insur ance coverage, are expected to utilize these resources, but no family is expected to impoverish itself to meet medical or hospital expenses of polio.” The Founda tion stands ready to help all who need help, the chapter chairman added.
